BODEGAS CEPA 21

Bodegas Cepa21

Bodegas Cepa 21 is the new ambitious project headed by the Moro family, the owners of Bodegas Emilio Moro, one of the most emblematic wineries in the Ribera del Duero. The aim of this project has been to build a modern, functional, minimalist new winery drawing on the savoir faire acquired over the years by several generations of the Moro family in the making of modern-style wines.

The Moro brothers, José and Javier, wanted to bring some of their best friends into the project and get them to experience some of the thrills and excitement of being part of the world of wine.

Bodegas Cepa 21’s aim is to produce the highest quality grapes to provide the optimum raw material for the wine-making process.

Achieving this goal requires a judicious selection of plots for planting and careful, painstaking work in the vines.

In the section that follows, a brief summary is made of the soils and areas that were chosen to plant the vineyard.

Of the 50.38 hectares (124 acres) currently owned by Bodegas Cepa 21, most of them are located in the area directly surrounding the winery.

The valley in which the winery is situated is formed by a large, ancient geological basement and by tertiary era sediments of silt and clay sands. The vineyards are planted at 780 and 850 meters above sea level.

The essential conditions for our vineyards are land with the right exposure and soils with minimum levels of active limestone and low vigor that will produce short growing seasons.

These criteria are then subjected to a thorough monitoring of the soils before the planting is carried out.

Among other elements, the soil is analyzed for its organic matter, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, active limestone, micro-elements and heavy metals.

Having understood the origin and composition of our soils, we are then able to take better care of the environment, the vines and above all the soils themselves.
