La tradición vitícola de Valdeorras se remonta a la época romana. Al amparo de un microclima mediterráneo-oceánico, los romanos, plantaron viñedos y construyeron lagares. Dieron así origen a una cultura, hoy secular, en la atención de la viña y la elaboración de exquisitos caldos, a los que cantaron romeros y peregrinos de camino a Santiago. Desde aquella época, el arduo camino recorrido por viticultores y elaboradores fue dando sus frutos hasta conseguir que en el año 1945, se reconociese la Denominación de Origen Valdeorras por Orden Ministerial. La Entidad, nació con la vocación de trabajar en la recuperación de variedades autóctonas como el Godello y el Mencía, siendo sus líneas fundamentales de actuación las de apostar por la calidad, impulsar el control, facilitar la promoción y buscar nuevos caminos de expansión y comercialización.
