Marqués de Vargas

Marqués de Vargas Wineries is a solid family project based on three prestigious appellations of origin, Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Rías Baixas, where they produce limited editions of exclusive high-end wines made with grapes from their own vineyards. The quality and personality of these wines is internationally recognized.

Everything goes back to 1840 when Don Felipe de la Mata, VIII Marquis of Vargas, decided to plant the first vineyards in the Hacienda Pradolagar. Since then, four generations of this lineage have been cultivating the vineyards of this property. Pelayo de la Mata, Conde de San Cristóbal, and his brother Francisco, IX Marqués de Vargas, who became mayor of Logroño, kept alive the passion for the vines of Pradolagar.

Nowadays, Marqués de Vargas Wineries is already a solid project with presence not only in Rioja, but also with wineries in other prestigious areas such as Ribera del Duero and Rías Baixas.

Location

The winery, located in the center of its own vineyard, following the concept of château, is located in the heart of the Ebro Valley, in an area known popularly as The Three Marquises, where the vineyards of three reputed Rioja wineries, founded by Marquesses.

A privileged situation for the cultivation of the vine because of its extreme continental climate of Atlantic influence and a soft topography of clay-calcareous soils that produce balanced red wines, especially indicated for aging in barrels, with a body and high total acidity.

Vineyard

The vineyards of the Marqués de Vargas have an extension of 60 hectares divided into 16 plots, which are vinified separately, with red grape varieties characteristic of the Rioja such as Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo, Graciano and Maturana. Excellent quality vines that are grown without any type of herbicides and pesticides.

With a yield of between 4,500 and 5,000 kilos per hectare, our wines begin to materialize at the time of harvest when we select the grapes by hand in the vineyard itself.

Wines

Wines made with passion; Every day they work to achieve unique wines, with personality, that express the typicity of each of the main Denominations of Origin of Spain and reflect the unique characteristics of each of the "terroir" from which they come.

The "Cuverie", designed by Michel Rolland, allows them to vinify each of the 16 plots separately, and then we proceed to the aging of the wines in French and American oak barrels, besides being pioneers in using Russian oak barrels Seguin-Moreau.
