El Consejo Regulador de la Denominación de Origen se fundó en el año 1960. La viticultura empezaba a representar un poder económico importantísimo en el Penedès, se empezaron a establecer una serie de empresas que en sus fincas vitícolas elaboraban y embotellaban sus vinos y empezaban a comercializarlos. Esto dió pie a crear la Denominación de Origen Penedès; esta fundación quería ser simplemente el reconocimiento a un tipo de producto muy concreto, y además, ofrecer al consumidor una garantía de una determinada calidad zonal.

Localización

De la Cordillera Prelitoral al Mediterráneo, del Llobregat al Gaià. Tierra y sol, viña y vino... en armónico equilibrio para nutrir la calidad de los vinos DO Penedès.

Suelos

Se encuentran tierras profundas, ni demasiado arenosas ni muy arcillosas, permeables y que retienen bien el agua de la lluvia. El suelo es pobre en materia orgánica y poco fértil.

Clima

De tipo mediterráneo, en general cálido y suave; más cálido en la zona del bajo Penedès, con temperaturas ligeramente más baja que en el resto, donde el clima prelitoral produce mayor contraste y las heladas son más frecuentes. 

Variedades de uva

Blancas: Macabeo, Xarelo, Parellada, Chardonnay, Rieslig, Gewürztraminer, Chenin Blanc, Moscatel de Alejandría, Garnacha Blanca, Sumoi Blanca y Viognier. Tintas: Garnacha, Merlot, Cariñena, Ull de Llebre, Pinot Noir, Monastrell, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Sumoll y Petit Verdot.
